Sandalwood

-Sandalwood or Chandan in Hindi is an evergreen short to medium-height tree. It is originally native to dry areas such as Indonesia, Western Australia, Philippines. Now it is naturalized and cultivated in India, and Sri Lanka also.

-Sandalwood is recognized as a Vulnerable species due to over-exploitation and degraded land use.

-The flowers are bright red and adapted to pollination by insects. Usual pollinators are a variety of bees. The fruits are edible and are liked by a lot of birds.

-The tree is a host plant for Red-base jezebel and is a nectar plant for many butterflies including Great Eggfly, Common Jay, Common Rose, Blue Tiger, and Common Crow.

-Sandalwood oil is used to treat skin diseases and is considered an excellent sedative in Chinese medicine.
